Fuel Economy Improvement: “Performance without compromise”
Across all global markets and across all sectors of the automotive industry (passenger car, light and heavy truck and bus) fuel consumption improvement is a subject that is at the very top of the strategic agenda. However, realising a significant improvement in fuel economy is a complex issue that involves numerous key stakeholders (vehicle manufacturer’s, tier 1 suppliers, government and Regulatory bodies, oil companies and ultimately the end consumer) that do not have homogeneous objectives, which is compounded when considered across global markets. This paper looks at the issues driving fuel economy improvement initiatives, then explores technical options that already exist and those being developed that could be used to create more fuel-efficient vehicles without compromising vehicle performance, “without compromise” being the key factor. Performance degradation is currently seen as the significant contributing factor why many consumers are unwilling to change vehicle purchasing habits. The paper also focuses on the market-based incentives that would facilitate this change and how these differ by global region.
